The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is a joint positioned in front of your ears on both sides of your face. This joint joins the lower jawbone to the skull and enables a variety of complicated actions, including chewing, yawning, swallowing, speaking, and opening and closing the mouth. You can find your TMJ by placing your hands slightly in front of your ears on either side of your face; you should be able to feel it by opening and closing your mouth. TMD, as the name implies, refers to a malfunction of the TMJ.
